1. Turn It Inside Out — Every Time
This is the single most important step. Washing your tee inside out protects the graphic print and the outer fabric from friction, fading, and pilling. It takes two seconds and makes a huge difference over time.
2. Wash Cold, Always
Hot water is the enemy of vintage-style tees. It causes shrinkage, breaks down dye faster, and can crack or peel screen-printed or DTF graphics. Stick to cold water (60°F or below) on a gentle cycle.
Bonus: Cold washing is better for the environment and your energy bill.
3. Dry on Low Heat
When it's time to dry, keep it on low heat and remove your tee while slightly damp to keep it looking its best.
Pro tip: Laying a tee flat to dry also helps it keep its shape better than hanging, which can stretch the shoulders over time.
4. Don't Over-Wash
Vintage tees — especially garment-dyed ones — actually look better with moderate washing. Over-washing accelerates fading and wear. Unless it's visibly dirty or sweaty, a tee worn for a few hours can usually be aired out and worn again.
5. Store It Right
Fold your tees rather than hanging them long-term. Hanging can stretch the neckline and shoulders, especially on softer, ringspun cotton styles. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to prevent unintentional fading.
