But if you've never ordered a custom tee before, you might have questions. What's the process like? How long does it take? What can actually be done? This guide walks you through everything.
Step 1: Start With Your Idea
It doesn't have to be fully formed. Some customers come to us with a detailed sketch; others just have a vibe — "something vintage," "a faded sun design," "my dog's face but make it cool." We work with all of it.
Think about:
- The feel — bold and graphic, subtle and worn-in, or somewhere in between?
- Colors — bleach naturally pulls warm golds, oranges, and whites depending on the base shirt color
- Text or no text — do you want words, a graphic, or both?
- Occasion — gift, event, everyday wear?
Step 2: Choose Your Base Shirt
The base shirt matters more than most people realize. Different fabrics and colors react differently to the bleaching process.
At The Flat Creek Shop, we work with:

- Comfort Colors — garment-dyed, softer feel, produces beautiful earthy bleach tones

Step 3: Submit Your Request
Reach out through our custom design page with your idea, preferred shirt style, size, and any reference images you have. The more detail, the better — but don't stress if you're not sure. We'll ask the right questions.
We'll follow up with a quick consultation to confirm the design direction before we start.
Step 4: We Get to Work
Once we've aligned on the design, we hand-bleach your shirt. Every piece is done by hand, which means no two are exactly alike — that's the whole point.
Depending on the complexity of the design and our current order volume, turnaround is typically 5–10 business days before shipping.
Step 5: It Ships to You
We package every order with care and ship it straight to your door. You'll get a tracking number as soon as it's on its way.
What to Expect (Honest Notes)
- Slight variations are normal — hand-bleaching is an art, not a machine process. Minor differences from any reference image are part of what makes it special.
- Colors depend on the base — we can't guarantee exact shades, but we'll always aim for the look you described.
- Custom orders are final sale — since each piece is made specifically for you, we don't accept returns on custom items unless there's a defect.
