Behind the Bleach: How We Create Our One-of-a-Kind Bleached Tees

Behind the Bleach: How We Create Our One-of-a-Kind Bleached Tees - The Flat Creek Shop LLC

Every bleached tee from The Flat Creek Shop starts as a blank canvas β€” and ends as something totally unique. No two are exactly alike, and that's exactly the point. Here's a peek behind the curtain at how we bring these nostalgic, one-of-a-kind designs to life.

It Starts With the Right Blank

Not all t-shirts bleach the same way. We've tested dozens of blanks and keep coming back to two favorites: the Gildan Softstyle for bold, high-contrast bleach effects, and Comfort Colors for that soft, garment-dyed base that produces beautiful earthy tones. The blank is the foundation β€” get it wrong and the whole design suffers.

The Bleaching Process

Once we have the right shirt, we apply bleach by hand. Depending on the design, that might mean spraying, dabbing, stenciling, or a combination of techniques. We've refined our process over time to get consistent results β€” warm golds, deep oranges, soft creams β€” while still keeping that handmade character that makes each piece unique.

Every shirt reacts a little differently based on the fabric, the dye lot, and even the humidity that day. That's part of what makes hand-bleaching an art rather than a science.

Rinsing, Washing & Inspecting

After bleaching, each shirt is carefully rinsed and washed to stop the bleaching process and set the design. Then we inspect every piece before it ships. If it doesn't meet our standard, it doesn't go out.

The Finished Product

The result is a tee that looks like it has a story β€” because it does. Whether it ends up in our Throwback Vibes collection or our FarmHouse Favorites collection, every piece carries the same handmade character that defines The Flat Creek Shop.
